Community Sailing Center

At first glance, the sport of sailing feels a little bougie. Like it’s a pastime for wealthy, older white folks who can afford the boat and the time to sail off into the sunset in pink shorts and docksiders.

But when regular people have the freedom to get on a boat, sailing becomes a powerful passport to experiences that can change perspectives, fast. Teenagers put down tech and learn to work as a crew to harness the wind. Older folks see the city they’ve lived in for a lifetime in a whole new light from the middle of a lake they may have never been on. Physics and ecology concepts come to life for students. The person in a wheelchair becomes as free to glide along the water as anyone else.

This concept is something the Community Sailing Center had struggled to convey for its first ten years as a fledgling non-profit that welcomes anyone to Lake Champlain, regardless of age, race, gender, ability, or income. We crafted a visual and verbal style that became the backbone of every CSC message since 2009, allowing us to tell their full story and attract donors, partner organizations, tourists, summer campers, novices, and experts to grow a diverse Sailing Center community.
